Owned by the late Sir Stan Clarke (President of Northern Racing tracks, perplexingly including Fontwell and Brighton!) Lord Gyllene won the ’97 Grand National by a whopping 25 lengths. 1997 was the year that an IRA bomb scare caused chaos with all the car park being impounded and the race delayed until Monday. Lord Gyllene was less impacted by the delay as his stables were only two hours away, compared to the longer journey that other runners had to make between the scheduled and rescheduled races.

After victory in 1997 the horse suffered a string of injuries and only raced twice in the three years after his National win. It was entered in 2001 and given only 9st6lb to carry (then trained by new trainer Martin Pipe) but was retired before the race.
