But for a so-so ride in 1972 Gay Trip could have been remembered as a two time National winner. By Vulgan, and out of Turkish Tourist he began racing on the flat, and switched to hurdles as a five year old.

The horse was one of the National winners that showed very good form prior to Aintree’s big day, and won the Mackeson Gold Cup as well as placing at the Cheltenham Festival. His last race before the Grand National was running sixth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He took the 1970 by an impressive 20 lengths, beating Vulture into second.

On the day of the race the horse carried top weight, and won by 20 lengths. Grand National betting system fans should note that since then only Red Rum has carried top weight to victory, with the burden proving too much for most horses.
