Regal went down in the Grand National Statistics books as the youngest ever winner of the grueling race, taking the prize at a very young five years old.

The owner was James Machell, who was also an acomplished trainer, though Regal was recorded as being trained by James Jewitt. James Machell was the owner/trainer of the winners in 1873, and 1874. He would later also train Seaman who won in 1882.

As expected for such a young horse it was largely unfancied by the betting public, and returned at a “pony”, or 25/1 if you are not au fait with tic tac slang! Jockey Joe Cannon won his first and only National. I will be interested to research whether he was a relation to Tom Cannon who later trained the 1888 winner Playfair.
