A year after George Steven steered Emblem to victory on behalf of Lord Coventry he went and repeated the feat on Emblematic. Both horses were trained by Edwin Weever. The winner was another six year old, an age considered too young for a National now, but at which several of the 1800′s races were won at. 25 went to post in the biggest field in a few years. Arbury again came second as it had in the 1863 race.
