The largest field to date lined up, and the crowd had backed Tom Oliver and the Curate into 4/1 favouritism. Mr Oliver was having his tenth ride in the race, but found one to good in the form of Chandler. Chandler won by the tightest margin yet recorded, that of half a length. His jockey is recorded variously as holding the rank of Lieutenant and Captain, this being because with the proceeds of this win Josey Little purchased an improved commission. There were three racing fatalities, making it the most brutal Grand National race to date.
