PinnacleSome great racing history for you courtesy of the Daily Mail from 1934. This was what emerged from under the lino: the picture is of jockey Steve Donoghue winning the Lancashire Breeders Produce Stakes on Kingsam.
The race was held at Liverpool. I didn’t actually realise that Aintree used to have flat racing, having grown up associating the track with the Grand National and jumps racing.
It will be interesting to research Steve Donoghue and other jockeys from this era.
The big headline of the day is Mr Martin Benson paying £50k for Derby winner Windsor Lad, buying it from the Maharajah of Rajpipla! I am guessing these two were the Tabor and Magnier of their day?! I’ll be writing a blog about Windsor Lad in the next few months, looking forward to reading into whether the £50k was a good investment. Back in those days they actually tilted Derby winners at the St Leger.
Runners and riders from the two cards, the long gone Hurst Park and Liverpool. Racing wasn’t associated with sponsorship back then, so every race has a prestigious looking name! Price money was a minimum of £200 with the big handicap carrying £1500 and the main race of the day (Atlantic Cup) giving £3000 to the winner. Taking into account inflation this stacks up very well against the £1943 the winner will get for taking tonights 7:00 at Hamilton.
The Daily Mail‘s “Robin Goodfellow” was a fellow called Captain Eric Rickman. I bet he smoked a pipe and had a great ‘tache.
