Roger Federer certainly raised some eyebrows last week and it was not just due to his destruction of World No. 10, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the final.

Federer destroyed the Argentine 6-1, 6-4 in just under 90 minutes but it was his semi-final performance that really caught everyone’s attention.

Federer still Fighting

Many people have doubted the former World No. 1 in terms of his want to tough it out on tour. The man from Swizerland has had some unexpected losses in the past year. Most of them being from two sets up; a sign of an ageing champion.

In the semi-finals last week, Nikolay Davydenko was finding some form of his own as he was clearly in control of the match being a set and 3-2 up with a break. Federer seemed stubborn with his tactics and the match seemed over. However, the current World No. 3 stunned us all by digging deep to reel off four games in a row to take the set and then continue by winning the third 6-4.

Federer’s big comeback was great to see, especially to see the man himself so fired up by his performance that he took apart a difficult opponent in the final. It was great to see him back to his best and looking completely confident once again.

Federer still only 13/10 to win a Grand Slam this year

Federer’s indoor form is clearly top notch. He has not lost indoors for some time but that does not change his Grand Slam outlook. He still has not beaten Nadal in a five set contest since 2007 or shown us any sort of form to make us believe he will win one this year.

With Djokovic in the similar form to last year, Nadal and Murray improving, there seems to be no space for the 30-year-old to make one last run before he retires. Bwin have him best priced to win 1+ grand slams this year at 13/10, while they also offer a favoured price of 6/11 that he will win no Grand Slams in ’12.

Personally, I think you have a better chance of seeing Murray victorious at a Grand Slam this year rather than Federer; but either way it is great to see the old champion still caring on tour. Definitely great for the game of tennis.

The top players return to action in March where two ATP Master’s events take place on the hard courts of the USA.

I got my journalism degree from Mississippi State University and have been offering advice on many sports for a fair few years now. I started off offering tips on tennis during the big tournaments (I played a lot as a junior) and really enjoyed helping out my Dad with tips.

After doing this for a few years, I realised that looking for value could be found in other sports that I enjoyed such as darts, snooker and football. This led to many accumulators no matter what the sport and then offering on advice on anybody that asked.

I am looking forward to putting my ideas down on paper and always appreciate comments from the reader.
